Courses And Activities
Cwmbran SDC offer a wide variety of services including help with shopping trips, education etc. Below you will find information including a brief description, if you need more information you can contact us here. Some but not all of our course are run here at the centre in Cwmbran, transport is provided to/from the centre and where we need to use facilities in other centres we also provide transport.
Basic Skills, Literacy and Numeracy
The course will help you gain confidence in basic reading, writing, speaking, listening and/or numeracy. You will work at your own pace on topics which interest you. You will probably works towards a City and Guilds certificate in communication skills.
I.T
A large variety of computer courses are on offer many leading to accreditation, with additional equipment for disabled people to access ICT.
Equal People
A course written by the Open University. It consists of discussion, watching video and listening to tapes. There are three themes:
• Book 1 - Finding out about the past.
• Book 2 - Speaking out for equal rights.
• Book 3 - Working together for change.
Art
A large variety of techniques using paint and other materials. leading clients to produce a range of creative artwork.
Pottery
Clients find this class to be relaxing and theraputic, where they will work with clay and learn various techniques. Clients will make and decorate tiles and simple pots.
Cookery
The course covers basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, hygiene, understanding basic cooking methods and use of equipment. Students will need to purchase their own ingredients each week
Gardening (practical)
This is a practical, hands on gardening course. You will prepare the ground, learn to use tools and plant and grow crops.
Photography
You will learn basic photographic skills, composition and lighting. You will experience practical skills and taking photographs.
Personal Well Being
Personal well being looks at how we judge the function we are attending, what clothes we should wear, i.e. colour and style. It also looks at interior design, designing your bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and lounge etc. We look at what we like for ourselves and what we are happiest with.
Relationships
In this class it looks at how we can correct any problems within a relationship, how we can make it better, do we need to change, can we see it from someone else’s point of view and what a relationship means to us.
Contraception is also explained, what to use, how to use it and the importance of the male and female productive cycle.
Weight Training
We offer weight training to those who would like to work on their upper or lower body strength to enable more freedom of choice for ourselves. When we look good we feel good! This helps with our confidence to try other things.
Personal Development Program
This program has 11 units and is built up over a period of four weeks.
It enables those with a disability to build up their confidence, encourage communication skills on how to cope with day to day stress. This course is particularly useful for those who would like to be more assertive and manage their time more effectively in order to plan for their future. Presentation, interviewing and job seeking skills are also part of this course.
Physiotherapy
This particular activity is excellent to recondition our bodies. It defines muscles and helps us to sit in a correct manner, strengthening posture. It gives us more strength to do things we thought impossible with the satisfaction of achievement.
Work Experience
We give tasters to those who might like to go into employment. We look at available placements, listen to their needs, help plan particular goals and build up confidence.
