Cwmbran Community Council

Committee Information

Environmental Awareness and Planning Committee

The Environmental Awareness and Planning Committee meets monthly (2nd Monday, 6pm) and is an expanding and exciting Committee which has grown to provide a very important forum for discussion on all environmental issues and directly organises a wide range of environmentally-orientated events and activities in the area.

In 1998 the Committee received the coveted Queen Mother's Birthday Premier Award for local authorities in recognition of its services to the community over a period of 25 years. The Committee is affiliated to Keep Wales Tidy Campaign and comprises elected members of Cwmbran Community Council, elected members of Torfaen County Borough Council, representative of local Comprehensive Schools and local companies, as well as lobbying for improvements in terms of flitter prevention and environmental education.

Policy and Finance Committee

The Policy and Finance Committee usually meets monthly (2nd Wednesday, 6pm) and acts as an 'umbrella' Committee which, in the main, comprises the Chairmen and women of the other Council Committees. This Committee deals with all aspects of policy, finances, staffing and other important issues which need to be considered. This Committee receives reports from other main Committees and considers matters of general Council concern. The Committee also provides funding for a number of local initiatives and oversees the Council's Annual Civic Dinner.

Events Committee

The Events Committee meets monthly (1st Tuesday, 6pm) and is the Council's largest spending Committee. The Committee oversees the organisation of a wide range of annual functions, events & activites, including Summer Playschemes (6 for 2000, catering for over 1000 children of primary school age and employing over 70 temporary staff), a Primary Schools Choral Festival, a Comprehensive Schools Choral Festival, the joint promotion of the Cwmbran Carnival and other 'ad hoc' events and activites.

Community Task Committee

The Community Task Committee meets three or four times a year (usually 1st Thursday, 6pm) and oversees the work of an innovative scheme which has been set up to carry out gardening and internal decorating work, particularly for elderly and disabled folks in the area. The Scheme employs two full-time workers and occasionally casual labour and the Scheme itself has been 'copied' by other local councils. The financing of the Scheme is found under Section 137 of the

Local Government Act 1972.

Grants Committee

The Grants to Voluntary Organisations Committee usually meets twice a year to consider applications from local organisations.

The Committee normally provides small grants towards the purchase of equipment and other tangible items, as well as for, say, musical instruments for local bands, kit for local youth sports teams and money for repairs and furnishings for local churches, youth uniformed organisations & others.
