Blaenavon Town Council
Under the re-organisation of Local Government in 1974, the former Urban District Councils became represented by a new Borough Council, situated in the mutually agreed most convenient conurbation.
It was proposed the new "community" or "town" councils are set up if the populace so desired. Most areas opted for the new idea, although the concept of nominated non-political members soon went out of the window. The first elections were held in 1974 and it was soon evident that even at this basic, grass root level of government, politics were to play a major part.
Blaenavon Town Council originally had eighteen members, six from each of three wards. Further re-organisation - the disbanding of the long established County Councils for instance, saw this number reduced to sixteen councillors representing two wards.
From its inception in 1974 until 1981 Independent members held the Chairmanship of the Council, from that time until the present our "First Citizen" has belonged to a political party.
The position at present could not be more finely balanced with the Labour party holding eight votes and Independent members similarly represented. The local council plays an active part in local government due largely to the fact that three County Borough members also sit on the Town Council.
Council meets twice a month on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Council Chamber, Church View, Church Road. Press and public are always welcome!
Among the responsibilities shared with our County Borough Torfaen, are Planning Application, upkeep of Rights of Way and Footpaths and provision of wayside benches throughout the locality.
Recent developments include proportional funding of town centre improvement schemes and regular Grant Awards to local organisations and charities.
