Help With Your Fuel Bills

Energy Savings TrustWith escalating fuel bills and changes to housing benefit, there has never been a better time for people to save money by installing energy efficient measures in their home or access support from energy suppliers.

Warm Home Discounts

What is it?

The Warm Homes Discount (WHD) is a new scheme funded by energy suppliers. It will provide approx £1.13 billion direct and indirect financial support to vulnerable energy consumers over the next four years. The WHD scheme separates eligible households into two groups – the 'Core' group and the 'Broader' group. Households in the core group will automatically receive discounts on their energy bill without having to take any actions. Support under the core group is targeted at older, poorer, pensioner households including:

  • 2011/12: Households in receipt of guarantee element of pension credit
  • 2012/13; Households in receipt of guarantee element of pension credit and over 80 and in receipt of savings element of pension credit
  • 2013/14: Households in receipt of guarantee element of pension credit and over 75 and in receipt of savings element of pension credit
  • 2014/15: All households in receipt of guarantee and savings element of pension credit.

All payments for 2011/12 will be made by March 2012.

WHD offers £120 annual discount on electricity bills.

Broader group eligibility criteria for each energy supplier is outlined in the document below - open the link for more information. Households who feel they may qualify for the WHD under the broader group should submit an application directly to their energy supplier. Under the WHD scheme, suppliers have discretion over which household falls under their broader group criteria.

The WHD is available for both credit customers and pay-as-you-go (pre-payment meter customers).

Ring your energy provider and ask them about this scheme and to find out if you qualify.
