Ear candles have been used by many cultures as an effective natural therapy since ancient times. Historical roots can be found among the peoples of the Siberian prairies, Asia and the native North and South American Indians.
The Hopi, the oldest Pueblo people with great medicinal knowledge brought this therapy to Europe. Ear candles have a purely physical function. A light suction action (chimney effect) and the movement of the flame create a vibration of air in the candle, generating a massage-like effect on the ear-drum. This induces a pleasant feeling of warmth and a balance of pressures in the ears, forehead and sinuses. It is soothing and helpful for earache and headache, ear noise, stress and nervousness.
Treatment may also spontaneously cause freer nasal breathing and an improved sense of smell, even when the nose was blocked before treatment.
The candles are actually hollow tubes that are made according to a traditional Hopi Indian formula. Using only natural ingredients the candles are produced to very high standards and conform to the EC guidelines for medical products. They are made from organically grown flax, pure beeswax, honey extract and herbs such as Sage, St John's Wort, Camomile, Beta Carotene and pure essential oils. They contain a special filter, which is the shape of the Mother Earth symbol, this prevents any excessive candle residue entering the ear.
The treatment is gentle and non-invasive, it is much more pleasant than syringing, the safe introduction of heat together with the natural ingredients of the candle is a method of easing pain or discomfort.
A treatment involves gently inserting the candle a fraction of an inch into the outer ear canal, it is then withdrawn and if the client is happy it is then lighted and reinserted into the ear. During the treatment the client will experience a warm feeling with cracking sound (similar to bacon sizzling). When the candle has burnt down, which usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes, the other ear is treated in the same way. The treatment is finished with a face massage, which further enhances the action of the candles, stimulates the energy points, increases circulation of blood and lymph, helps to drain sinus tubes, relaxes the client and eliminates toxins.
Treatment should not be given if the client has perforated eardrums or grommets.
