Baby & Toddler Tuesdays

Our fabulous Baby & Toddler Tuesdays are aimed at having fun and relaxing with your baby/pre-schooler in a friendly and supportive environment. Sessions run throughout the day, just pay normal admission fee to the farm and access as many sessions as you like!*

*Please note some sessions require booking and all operate on a first come, first served basis on the day...when they’re full, they’re full!

We are delighted to welcome some new and exciting activities to explore for 2018 and have created a nifty table below so you can see what to expect over the coming months. Underneath the table is a glossary with a description of each activity and what you can expect.

Where sessions are preceded by PP, these are Practical Parenting sessions provided by the Torfaen pre-school provision team and Aneurin Bevan Health Board who offer fantastic, practical and informative sessions around the borough through their Incredible Years programmes, a wonderful resource for parents through all stages of baby & toddler life.

Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Kate at the Farm for more details.  We are SO looking forward to seeing you all again soon and please remember to spread the word with any new mums, dads, grandparents and carers you know so they can come and have loads of fun with their babies and little ones too!

Baby & Toddler Tuesdays run every week from Tuesday 6th February 2018 up to and including Tuesday 27th November 2018.  Sessions may occasionally be changed or cancelled at late notice due to factors outside our control.  You are always advised to call and check on the day if you are coming for a specific activity.

Babes in the Woods – perfect for the nature babies and toddlers amongst you!  Come along to our woodland Dell and enjoy the great outdoors with your little one and our fantastic team.  Whatever the weather, so long as you come suitably suited and booted, it’s the perfect environment to explore and connect with nature.  Marvel as your baby gets so much pleasure from the natural environment.  We all know that sometimes the simple act of getting outside with our baby or toddler can have a positive effect on their mood (and ours)!  There is a universal feeling we get when we put ourselves outside and into the elements. We feel more open and connected to our world, and our babies feel the same way...we all embrace this at the farm every day and would like to share it with you too!  The theme will change and vary depending on the season.

Baby Sensory -  introduce your baby to a world of sensory exploration, where the two of you can relax, have fun and share in each other’s delight...every element has been meticulously designed with your baby’s development in mind. Created by Dr Lin Day, it’s the result of a lifetime’s work and study and testament to her overriding passion to inspire and educate children and support their parents.

A magical world, full of glowing balls, light shows, puppets, bubbles, rainbows, petals, massage, signing and songs. Imagination is a vital part of childhood. And together you can dance in the snow or dive under the waves, trek through a rainforest and sing the shanties of sea pirates.

Baby & Toddler Resuscitation – Each year, a number of babies and children will suffer an accident or illness severe enough to stop them breathing.  In a small number of these cases, it will even stop their heart beating.  This is a terrifying thought and something we hope will never happen but some basic skills can help you help your baby if you ever were to be in this situation. Come along to this Practical Parenting session and learn more.

Baby Top Tips - helpful tips to help you deal with a range of topics including Coping with Crying, Helping My Baby Feel Loved, Encouraging your Baby & Tips for Sleeping

Baby Yoga - Gentle stretching, strengthening & toning postures for Mum with gentle engaging movements & songs for baby ending with a short relaxation.  Baby Yoga is a wonderful way to share some special time with your baby as well as meet other mums.  Baby Yoga supports your baby's physical, emotional & cognitive development.  Please bring a yoga mat and a blanket.  Sessions run by Nicola who is fully qualified and certified by Birthlight as well as CRB verified.  Suitable from your 6/8 week check up until baby is on the move!

BabyMoga - We are delighted to welcome Ffion, a qualified and fully insured baby massage instructor, certified and accredited by the Royal College of Midwives.

Ffion is passionate about babies and the importance of touch for both their emotional and physical development. One on one time with your baby, responding to their engagement cues and demonstrating love will strengthen that special bond and close relationship. Touch stimulates the release of the love hormone 'oxytocin' and the natural stress relievers 'endorphins' making baby feel calm, content and nurtured.  Come and enjoy her taster session and find out how you can join her local sessions.

Creation Station - Baby Discover - We are delighted to welcome Sarah of Creation Station with her award winning arts and crafts classes for children and babies!  They are both fun and educational, inspiring imagination and creativity. If you want to enjoy quality time creating wonderful artwork and memories with your little one, without the stress and mess of art and craft activities at home, this is the session for you!  All sessions are underpinned by the government's Early Years Foundation Stage; the three prime areas of which are: Communication and language, Physical development and Personal, social and emotional development. Sarah's classes support and encourage all of these areas whilst remaining fun and relaxed for both children and parents/carers.

Cymraeg i Blant/Welsh for KidsWe are over the moon to welcome Liz who is here to introduce the Welsh language to your baby in a fun and informal way...sessions may include Baby Massage, Yoga, Singalong and Stories.  Suitable for all babies and toddlers and their adults - activities will vary and may be age dependent.  These groups are a great way to gain confidence and to start using some simple Welsh phrases with your baby as well as making new friends. All welcome - non-Welsh speakers, Welsh learners & Welsh speakers.  Cymraeg for Kids was set up to make parents aware of the bilingual journey available for them and their child by choosing Welsh medium childcare and education.

Dealing with Separation Anxiety (Practical Parenting)  Separation anxiety is a normal emotional stage of development that starts when babies begin to understand that things and people exist even when they're not present – something called "object permanence."

At certain stages, most babies or toddlers will show true anxiety and be upset at the prospect – or reality – of being separated from a parent. If you think about separation anxiety in evolutionary terms, it makes sense: A defenseless baby would naturally get upset at being separated from the person who protects and cares for him.  Come along to this Practical Parenting session if you would like to learn some handy tips on how to best deal with separation anxiety for you and your baby.

Family Information Service - we welcome Nicole of the FIS who is here to chat with you about all the helpful advice they can give you for your family.  The FIS is a friendly and informative mine of information and their lovely team can give you heaps of support ranging all the way from Choosing & Paying for Childcare to details on local groups to enjoy with your little one supporting positive parenting and helpful tips.  If you've never visited them or their website before, pop along and chat to Nicole who can point you in the right direction for almost anything family related!

Farm Tots – join our awesome team and have some fun of the farming variety, get to know some of our animals a little better! Great fun whatever the weather, suitable clothing and footwear a must! These sessions are all aimed at nurturing your child's natural curiosity and helping them to have fun discovering new and exciting sensory experiences.  Interaction with animals from an early age has several developmental benefits to children encompassing physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.

Going Back to Work (Practical Parenting) – the babymoon is drawing to an end and you have to face the prospect of going back to work and returning to a life that you can barely relate to after the whole experience of giving birth and welcoming your baby into the world!  How will your baby cope?!?  How will you cope?!?  As hard as it seems, you can do it!  Come along to this Practical Parenting session to learn more!

Health Education for Parents in Torfaen - What a fantastic initiative this is being set up in Torfaen by local GPs and Health Visitors...Are you confident that you could tell when your child was ill? Would you like a demonstration of what to do in emergencies?  These sessions are being run by Local GP Dr Beer in collaboration with Families First and Flying Start and will cover a variety of topics including Choking, Resuscitation and lots more! (must book on arrival)

Healthy Eating for Babies & Toddlers (Practical Parenting) - Just when you think your getting used to being responsible for a tiny human, it's time to start thinking about food!  When to wean?  What is a healthy balanced diet?  How to introduce new foods...many babies on hitting the toddler stage become more reluctant to eat particular foods or try anything new.  This is perfectly normal and stems from caveman times when we didn’t try things just in case they were unsafe. Come along to this Practical Parenting session and join Ruth, Torfaen's Pre-school Health and Sustainability Officer who will be showing you how to engage with your little one and make healthy eating fun, establishing great habits for life!

La Leche League - pop along and meet the lovely ladies of La Leche League, a charity which helps mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. They will welcome you if you are, are thinking about or have any queries about breastfeeding. Their support helps many local mums year on year!

Learn, Play, Grow - a unique, fun fitness programme exclusively designed to encourage little ones to have fun getting fit, healthy & confident.  Meet the Learn, Play, Grow Team and let them introduce your child to a love of sport, fitness & teamwork.  They also encourage children's play, learning and development using fun characters, stories, music and exciting games!  Pop along to a taster session to find out more!

Llaeth Mam/Mother's Milk - we welcome the lovely mums from this Newport based support and social group that welcomes expectant and breastfeeding mothers whether thinking about or already nursing, expressing or mix feeding, pop along and connect.

LGAC - Llantarnam Grange Art Centre - Join the awesome team from Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre and introduce your bundle of joy to the wonderful world of Art…we’re not imagining your baby/toddler to demonstrate Rembrandt abilities just yet but what a wonderful time to introduce them to Visual Arts and the sensory explosion that it involves…crunching paper, feeling paint between their fingers and toes and seeing their activities evolve into something they recognise on paper!  We are super excited to have the Grange crew on board and wish them a very warm welcome…toddlers will love this activity but all are welcome and can enjoy the sensory experience.  Please be aware that there is likely to be a little mess involved and dress baby in clothes which aren’t too precious or bring a change of clothes!

Lollipops & Ladybirds - Fantastic, local business Lollipops & Ladybirds are looking forward to supporting Baby & Toddler Tuesdays again this year and will be with us on a few occasions to help you create the perfect gifts. Create something with your baby/toddler that will be treasured forever!

Messy Monsters - We are delighted to welcome Leanne & Andy with Messy Monsters - a messy and sensory experience based in Newport for children aged 6 months to 5 years. They are  passionate about providing you with a fun, unique experience to share with your little monsters.  From painting walls to squidgy gloop, it's everything that you want to do at home with the children but we clean up for you!  Just remember ...... dress for mess!!!!

There are many benefits to messy play. Early childhood education experts say that play is the work of the child. This is true for all kids, but especially for babies and toddlers. Don’t be afraid of the mess. Roll up your sleeves and enjoy some messy play time with your little one.

Messy play stimulates the senses. The tactile experience gained during messy play helps little ones experience a variety of textures. During messy play, babies and toddlers are developing eye hand coordination and fine motor skills. What looks like a mess on the surface is truly a learning experience for your child.  So pop along and enjoy them exploring their senses! (Limited spaces, please book on arrival)

Mini First Aid - Would you know what to do in an emergency?  We are delighted to welcome Lisa who runs a very affordable first aid course for Babies & Toddlers in Newport...it's the moment all of us dread, anything happening to our babies but accidents can and do happen and it is far better to be armed with knowledge than to feel completely helpless...pop along and meet Lisa and find out more about her course and where you can join in

Moo Music -  a unique programme of fun songs for your baby/preschooler based around Maggie Moo and her farmyard friends and concepts that children find interesting such as Telling the Time, Questions, Puddle Jumping and Dinnertime...just perfect whilst at the farm!!  All the songs are written by a professional songwriter and recorded by professional musicians and vocalists using real instruments. This is children’s music that adults will enjoy too!  (limited spaces must book on arrival)

Musical Minis - designed with your child’s development in mind. The music is professionally recorded at a pace suitable for young children.  Musical Minis music groups can help your child be:-

  • A skilful communicator by developing language and co-ordination.
  • Emotionally developed through sharing stories and songs whilst meeting new friends.
  • A confident child by joining in the activities in a relaxed group atmosphere.
  • A creative child by letting the children explore the instruments, sounds, rhythm and movement.

Natural Nappies - did you know...Torfaen Council have a real nappy incentive scheme?!?  There are many benefits of using cloth nappies...you can save a lot of money!  They say on average parents spend £800 on nappies in a 2.5 year period and £100 on cloth over the same period, disposable nappies contain chemicals which are in close contact to your baby's skin, landfill issues with disposables and so much more!  What is more, Torfaen Council can put £30 towards your natural nappies!!. Pop along and chat top Maria and her team to find out more!

Newport Sling Library - run by sling consultancy Carry me Close, Katie & Julia will be on hand with expert advice on how to choose the best sling for you and your baby, and teaching proper techniques for safe, comfortable and easy baby-wearing.  It is natural for a baby to be close to their primary caregivers, they are happiest when being held.  This makes babywearing an obvious choice, come and learn more about the benefits and find out which option would be best for you and your baby!

Rhyme Time – the wonderful team from Torfaen Libraries join us to tell stories and sing songs. Children who listen to stories learn lots of new words and sentences. Learning to enjoy books gives young children a good start when they go to playgroup, nursery and school. Join the library team for some good old fashioned fun.

Rugby Tots - The world's favourite rugby play programme!  Fun, structured play sessions for pre school children age 2+ taking them on a journey of sporting imagination.  Rugby Tots sessions teach children how to catch, pass, kick, run with the ball and play as part of a team.

The Rugby Tots motto is simple; "make it more fun". They do this by delivering their specifically designed programme for each age group with energy, enthusiasm and excitement, creating an atmosphere in the class that is totally unique and engaging for parents and children alike.  Pop along and try out their taster session...even if you little one is not 2 yet, feel free to pop in and observe & have a chat to the friendly team!

Sing & Sign - Developed with the help of Speech and Language experts back in 2001, the "Sing and Sign" programme has since taught tens of thousands of parents across the UK how to sign with their babies and encourage amazing early communication.  As a part of typical development before speech is well established, babies naturally use a combination of gestures and sounds to help their parents understand them. For example they may point, shake their heads, clap their hands and wave "bye-bye". Now is a good time to introduce some extra gestures to help your baby communicate. It's easy to do and your baby will really enjoy it! Why not try milk, more, change nappy, or tired? Baby signing is wonderfully rewarding and fantastic fun. You will be amazed by what your baby is capable of telling you before being able to talk!  Sing and Sign's unique approach combines action songs, props, pictures and toys in musical activites designed to stimulate speech and language development.  This is your perfect opportunity to give it ago and find out about where you can access regular local classes!

Tiny Talk - we are so happy to be welcoming back Mandi, the new Tiny Talk representative for Cwmbran with her fab taster session! Using hands-on sensory activities that will thrill your baby, teaching them communication skills at the same time. You'll have so much fun, you'll forget you're doing something important too!  Using their senses, your baby will learn communication skills, fundamental to life. You'll help them to listen carefully, watch, sign and talk. (Limited spaces, please book on arrival)

Toddler Yoga -intended for toddlers and babies who are on the move! Using songs and rhymes alongside plenty of movement and stretching, this yoga set is designed to support the transition from babyhood to more developed forms of self-expression through movement. As babies make this transition to independence, physical contact with their parents is often diminished yet remains very important. Smart toddler yoga promotes strength, flexibility and balance. Relaxation and energetic activity are contrasted and balanced providing a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.

Toddlers – Establishing Boundaries (Practical Parenting) - As well as your love and respect, your toddler needs consistency. If you're consistent, it will help them to learn about how to behave. No toddler behaves sensibly all the time. That's why there will be times when you have to say "no", whether your child gets too close to the pond or experiments with throwing sand.

Tots Play - Baby and Toddler Play Programme—Ever wonder exactly HOW you are suppose to play with your new baby? Join Kaye of Tots Play for a unique mix of baby yoga, music and rhyme, baby sign language and sensory play all designed to give your baby's brain a boost. These sessions are a great taster for Kaye’s Baby Development Courses which we are very lucky to have running in Torfaen.

Valleys Gymnastic Academy – the wonderful gang from Valleys Gymnastic Academy are back with us this year for more gymnastic fun.  Gymnastics has physical, cognitive and psychological benefits for your little one as well as social, linguistic and creative.  What is more, they have GREAT FUN and burn off some of that incessant energy, it’s TotTastic!!

Walk & Talk - organised by our friends at Torfaen Sports Development, this fab addition to Baby & Toddler Tuesdays will be taking place once a month and is an opportunity to join others for a good old natter and a walk, meet like minded people and stretch your legs with your little one (Meet in Car Park)

Wonderful Wardrobe - There are pirates and kings and lots of princesses... butterflies, horses and pink fluffy dresses. Cowboys and firemen and animals galore and so many more costumes your child will adore!

At the Wonderful Wardrobe Jo knows there's no limitation to your child's imagination. That's why she has developed this unique pre-school programme to introduce music, action songs, dressing up and rhymes to your young child. Wonderful Wardrobe gives your child a fantastic outlet for their creativity.  It also improves their learning skills, physical development and social skills but most importantly they're having fun and so are you!
