Dealing with Separation Anxiety (Practical Parenting) Separation anxiety is a normal emotional stage of development that starts when babies begin to understand that things and people exist even when they're not present – something called "object permanence."
At certain stages, most babies or toddlers will show true anxiety and be upset at the prospect – or reality – of being separated from a parent. If you think about separation anxiety in evolutionary terms, it makes sense: A defenseless baby would naturally get upset at being separated from the person who protects and cares for him. Come along to this Practical Parenting session if you would like to learn some handy tips on how to best deal with separation anxiety for you and your baby.

Introduction to Baby Massage - Baby massage can help babies with sleep, wind, colic and relaxation. Massaging your baby can help you bond too! Long before babies are able to speak, or even respond to sounds and sights, they communicate with the world around them through touch. The power of touch to soothe and heal is instinctive. If a baby cries, for example, we may cuddle them or rub their back. Massaging your baby is an extension of this natural impulse. Find out more and get a basic intro at this Practical Parenting session.
Introduction to Babyled Weaning – You may have heard of it but what is it? Quite simply, babyled weaning means letting your child feed themselves from the very start of weaning. The term was originally coined by Gill Rapley, a former health visitor and midwife.
According to the most recent research most babies reach for food at around six months, which is also the time that mothers are being encouraged to wean onto solid foods by their Health Visitors, in accordance with the WHO guidelines.
The distinct advantage of weaning at around six months is that by then, our children are developmentally capable of feeding themselves proper food, in other words – no more mush! Find out more at this Practical Parenting session.

Messy Play - little ones have so much fun with mess! For adults, messy play can be a lot of work and feel stressful. However, there are many benefits to messy play. Early childhood education experts say that play is the work of the child. This is true for all kids, but especially for babies and toddlers. Don’t be afraid of the mess. Roll up your sleeves and enjoy some messy play time with your little one.
Messy play stimulates the senses. The tactile experience gained during messy play helps little ones experience a variety of textures. During messy play, babies and toddlers are developing eye hand coordination and fine motor skills. What looks like a mess on the surface is truly a learning experience for your child. So pop along and enjoy them exploring their senses!

Newport Sling Library - run by sling consultancy Carry me Close, Katie & Julia will be on hand with expert advice on how to choose the best sling for you and your baby, and teaching proper techniques for safe, comfortable and easy baby-wearing. Sing & Sign - Developed with the help of Speech and Language experts back in 2001, the "Sing and Sign" programme has since taught tens of thousands of parents across the UK how to sign with their babies and encourage amazing early communication. As a part of typical development before speech is well established, babies naturally use a combination of gestures and sounds to help their parents understand them. For example they may point, shake their heads, clap their hands and wave "bye-bye". Now is a good time to introduce some extra gestures to help your baby communicate. It's easy to do and your baby will really enjoy it! Why not try milk, more, change nappy, or tired? Baby signing is wonderfully rewarding and fantastic fun. You will be amazed by what your baby is capable of telling you before being able to talk! Sing and Sign's unique approach combines action songs, props, pictures and toys in musical activites designed to stimulate speech and language development. This is your perfect opportunity to give it ago and find out about where you can access regular local classes!

Toddler Yoga -intended for Toddlers and babies who are on the move! Using songs and rhymes alongside plenty of movement and stretching, this yoga set is designed to support the transition from babyhood to more developed forms of self-expression through movement. As babies make this transition to independence, physical contact with their parents is often diminished yet remains very important. Smart toddler yoga promotes strength, flexibility and balance. Relaxation and energetic activity are contrasted and balanced providing a foundation for a healthy lifestyle.
Toddlers – Establishing Boundaries (Practical Parenting) - As well as your love and respect, your toddler needs consistency. If you're consistent, it will help them to learn about how to behave. No toddler behaves sensibly all the time. That's why there will be times when you have to say "no", whether your child gets too close to the pond or experiments with throwing sand.
Toddlers – Healthy Eating (Practical Parenting) – many children on hitting the toddler stage become more reluctant to eat certain foods or try anything new. This is perfectly normal and stems from caveman times when we didn’t try things just in case they were unsafe. Come along to this Practical Parenting session to get some advice and top tips on how you can negotiate this stage.
