Blackthorn Meadow

Food Cooperatives

With the large number of allotments available it is possible to grow your own vegetables even if you only have a small garden but in some cases it isn't always possible due to work or family commitments etc.

This needn't be a problem as various community centres have food coops where you can buy good quality fruit, salad or vegetables for a reduced price.

If you want to eat healthily but are not sure if you can afford to then come along to Thornhill Community Centre and have a look at what the Thornhill food Co-op has to offer.

There are three different bags available, each costing £2.50. The content varies however, would normally include some of the following (subject to availability) :

  • Salad Bag – cucumber, tomatoes, onion, spring onions, lettuce, beetroot etc.
  • Vegetable Bag – Potatoes, Swede, carrots, onions and some kind of green vegetable – possibly cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli etc.
  • Fruit Bag – apple, oranges, pears, bananas, kiwi, grapes etc.
  • Barn eggs are also available at £1.40 for a dozen or 70p for half a dozen.

When a price comparison was carried out with produce available from a local supermarket a bag of the same items cost £4.80.

Orders are taken and paid for a week in advance on Tuesdays from 12.30 to 2.00pm.

The Food Co-operative is at the Thornhill Community Hall, Leadon Court, Thornhill, NP44 5TZ on Tuesdays from 12:30pm.

They now accept Healthy Start Vouchers.
