Blackthorne Lodge is less than five minutes walk from Coed-y-Paen village which offers a picturesque village Church, a Country Pub with an outstanding restaurant and country walks.

There are also three local golf courses - less than 5-10 minutes drive - to choose from including Woodlake Park Golf and Country Club , Greenmeadow Golf and Country Club and Alice Springs Golf Club all of which also hire out rooms for weddings and other get-togethers.

Reservoir FishermenSituated within 10 minutes walking distance of Llandegfedd Reservoir home of the Llandegfedd Fly Fishing Association the area offers lots of activies including sailing, wind surfing, fishing, bird watching and cruises. If you fancy a trip down a canal you can also visit Gotre Wharf.

Usk town offers a range of small traditional retail shops, coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. However, less than four miles away is the more modern and larger Cwmbran shopping precinct where you will find numerous large retailers including Asda, Sainsburys, David Evans, W H Smith, Mothercare, Boots, Top Shop, Evans and lots more.

A Vue Cinema and a host of cafes and restaurants can also be found in the Cwmbran Town Centre while Greenmeadow Community Farm can be found on the outskirts.

Llandegfedd Reservoir

Please note that Llandegfedd Reservoir is currently closed to the public while new water sports facilities and a club house are being built.

Bird Watching Permits

March 1st saw the start of a new 'Permit Year' for birdwatchers at Llandegfedd Reservoir. Permits can be obtained from the Rangers Office situated at the Dam end, just inside the gates to the sailing club.

  • Full day 6 fish £19.00
  • Full day 4 fish £16.00
  • Junior & OAP full day permit 6 fish £18.00
  • Junior 2 fish permit £7.50
  • Adult and child under 16yrs 6 fish permit £19.00
  • Catch & release (2 fish to be taken) £20.00
Fishing Boats
  • Full day motor 2 anglers £19.00 - 1 angler £16.00
  • 5 hour motor 2 anglers £16.00  - 1 angler £12.00
  • Wheely boat , Free to wheelchair users, otherwise normal boat price as shown above (wheelchair users take priority )

  • 5 hour boats are available on a first come first basis, advance bookings will not be taken
  • Bank fishing starts 8am, boats 9am
  • Closing times will be advertised on site
