Although the ancient practice of candling, or coning as it was known as, faded out in many parts of the world, in North Eastern Arizona, U.S.A. some native Hopi Indians kept the tradition alive. This tribe, the oldest of the Pueblo people have a deep and extensive knowledge of healing with a spiritual lifestyle and respect for traditional ceremonial culture. The Hopi Fire Clan used rolled waxed leaves infused with herbs as part of their spiritual ceremonies. The Hopi candles used today are named after this tribe ( Hopi meaning ‘peaceful ones’) who introduced this gentle therapy to the West, with the professional involvement of a German company called Biosun.
Conditions that benefit from this therapy....
Excessive ear wax
Earwax is a natural substance produced by the body to protect the eardrum from infection, and foreign matter such as environmental matter or things that may have crawled in!. Some people produce more wax than others and find that there can be a build up in the external auditory canal which can impair the hearing. Maintenance by monthly candling can help to stop the build up of hardened wax.
Pressure in air travel or diving
Many people experience pain during flight take off or from the pressure of diving. Pre treatments by thermo auricular therapy can reduce this dramatically and in some cases stop it happening completely, helping to balance the pressure in the outer and inner ear.
Sinusitis
A build up of mucous and inflammation of the sinuses. The most common cause is a viral infection such as the common cold. Symptoms include feeling congested, headaches, pain and tenderness in the face, worse when bending down. Monthly auricular therapy can help reduce frequency and severity of attacks.
Snoring
This is a coarse sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissues in the mouth, nose and throat (upper airways). It is often due to congestion of the upper respiratory airways, or being overweight with loss of muscle tone, particularly in the neck area.
Tinnitus
A constant or intermittent hissing, buzzing or ringing in the ear with the absence of any external sound source. Approximately 1 in 100 people have tinnitus continually seriously effecting their quality of life. There are several reasons for this condition including chronic muscle tension in the head and neck, disrupting the blood flow in these areas. Stimulation to the blood circulation by ear candling can relax these muscles.
Stress
One of the most pleasant effects of candling treatment is the relaxation it promotes, calming and soothing the nervous system. In many cases the treatment results in improved sleep patterns and a reduction in hyperactivity in children. The whole body can benefit from relaxation both physically and emotionally.
Glue Ear
Increasingly common in childhood, this disorder is due to an accumulation of viscous fluid in the middle ear. This sticky, glue like fluid prevents the ossicles from vibrating, leading to deafness. There is a malfunction of the Eustachian tube, which does not open as it should in response to swallowing and yawning. A treatment once a week for a month is recommended, and monthly maintenance treatments.
Other conditions that benefit are:
Bell’s Palsy, Candida, Rhinitis, Meniere’s, Labyrinthitis/Vertigo, Sleep Apnoea and T.M.J.Problems.
What can you expect when having a treatment?
Before treatment commences the therapist will complete a consultation form, and will proceed once she is satisfied that no contra indications are present such as a perforated eardrum.
From the comfort of the therapy couch, laying on your side and covered cosily with a blanket you will then feel the candle being placed gently into the opening of the ear canal. The candle will then be taken out , the face protected from any ash particles, and the candle will then be lit before being replaced gently back in the ear canal opening.
As the candle burns down there is a chimney effect with the vapours of the ingredients gently being released and massaging the ear canal, while light crackling or sizzling sounds may be heard. Sometimes popping sounds can be expeienced as the pressure is released and other sensations on the sinus areas may also be felt. When burnt to the appropriate safety level the candle will be removed and extinguished and the other ear will then be treated in the same way.
To complete this lovely relaxing therapy you will receive a wonderful facial massage that will enhance the benefits of this candling experience.
